YOU see how hard it is!
Take a look over this list (these are real-life choices I was faced with), pick one (or all), and tell me which name you'd have if forced to pick and why. I like to hear the reasons behind the choices.
1. Luva vs. Mirna
2. Medalou vs. Lois
3. Choose from this crazy bunch:
a. Lecta
b. Wilda
c. Erma
d. Zella
4. Arva vs. Minnie vs. Ida
5. Vesta vs. Florene
6. LaRue vs. VerlDene
7. Alta vs LaVee
Essay Question
Do you think it's a Utah thing? Is it just an old people thing? Or it is just an old-people-in-Utah thing?
1. Mirna. Because there was a laday in my ward (not an old lady) when I was a kid named Myrna and she was really pretty and sweet. And Luva reminds me of vulva.
ReplyDelete2. Lois - Lois Lane. Classic.
3. Erma - Erma Bombeck. Terrible name, but I love that lady.
4. Minnie. It's kind of cute.
5. Uh...this one is hard...Florene...because it sounds like a flower?
6. LaRue. The sound of the "v" and the "r" just sound so redneck to me.
7. Alta. No capitalization in the middle.
1. Luva, because it reminds me of Luna, and Nova, which I always thought would be a cool name. On the other hand, it also reminds me of Nuva Ring, but I think it still wins out.
ReplyDelete2. Lois, because it's a nice name, and also a real name. Medalou??
3. Zella. It's like Zelda! And Z names are cool. Sean chooses Lecta. It sounds like a super villain.
4. Minnie. I know a Minnie who is 2, and it's just adorable. (they named her Minerva--believe it)
5. vesta. I don't need a name that rhymes with chlorine.
6.LaRue. I could go by Rue, which has been made particularly cool by The Hunger Games.
7. alta. I'll go by Al. I like boy nicknames for girls.
I have a real, live, normal, cute friend who is expecting a baby. She wants to name it LaRue. No joke. Just tragic.
ReplyDeleteVesta. It's . . . interesting. And doesn't sound like a Utah name does like "Alta," "LaRue" "VerlDean." Who got the idea to put part of mom and part or dad's names together anyway? Weird.
ReplyDelete1. Mirna - even though it was a name my dad used to call people - you know, like crazy drivers, etc. "What are you DOING, Mirna?" But it is my sister's mother-in-law's name, so he had to stop doing that. I just can't like "Luva" - how would you even pronounce it? Loova? Love-uh?
ReplyDelete2. Lois. My mom's dear friend, plus a great choir teacher. Nice name. I like it.
3. Would have to go with Erma - same reason as Lara, though I'm pretty sure I was reading Erma Bombeck before she (Lara) was a twinkle in anyone's eye. And all the other names are ridiculous.
4. Probably Ida because it would be short for "Idaho" which is the celestial state. Also, Minnie reminds me of that annoying lady on "Hee Haw" - and don't say you don't know what Hee Haw is, or I'll really be feeling old. I do like Minnie on "Lark Rise to Candleford," though - she cracks me up!
5. I guess Vesta because Florene sounds like something that belongs on the period table of elements.
6. A former boyfriend's mom's name was "LaRue." She was very nice. It's not a great name, but it's better than VerlDene. (What's NOT?)
7. Alta - even though I don't ski. I veto any name starting with "La" (unless it's pitted against VerlDene, apparently.)
I didn't get a chance to answer this yet, but I wanted to earlier, so here goes:
ReplyDelete1. Luva, although I would want to spell it differently. I don't know why, but I can't read Mirna without hearing a nasal witchy voice that lingers on the r (specifically the wicked witch of the west - "Mirrrrrna").
2. Lois. Medalou sounds like a brand of milk.
3. I'd go with Zella, too. I think short Z names are cute. Well, not all of them I suppose. Cursed would be the child whose name was Zit. Anyway Lecta reminds me of Hannibal Lector (villainous as Jen said). I hadn't thought of Wilda beast until you mentioned it, but oh my heavens, I can't think of anything else for that name now. Erma doesn't seem too bad. It would be my second choice.
4. Minnie reminds me of Minnie Driver, which actually makes me like the name a little less. If I could make sure people would always say my name with a British accent, I wouldn't mind Arva.
5. Florene. I don't like Vesta.
6. LaRue cause I like the nickname Rue, too. Plus, who in their right mind would name someone VerlDene? seriously?
7. Alta. Again, it's contingent upon pronunciation. not Al-ta but All-ta. I think it's rather pretty in a mythological way.
Essay:
I'm pretty sure it's just an old people in general thing. Did I ever tell you my grandma's name was Majel? She definitely never set foot in Utah in her life, but her name fits right in with the rest.
