Little Red Riding Hood
What does it say about me that every time I read Anna the story of Little Red Riding Hood, my wolf-in-grandma's-nightgown voice has a very husky British accent?

ReplyDeleteI read the worst version of that story to Emme today. They picked it at the library and I thought, "Sure, no problem." Then I read it today to her. It ends with the wolf eating the grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood. Yes, that's the end. It has a lovely illustration of the wolf with the girl's head in his mouth and the rest of her body dangling out. Then it shows her in his stomach, and that's the last page. No hunter comes to the rescue. Nothing. Just a wolf eating two people. Ugh.
ReplyDeleteOh man, Mary. That story sounds terrible, although I have to admit that the image of the "body dangling" makes me laugh a little. Why would people do that with kids in mind?
ReplyDeleteI also read one version to Anna that gets quite graphic, like big descriptions about the hunter aiming the gun at the wolf's head and cutting the wolf open. I totally sugar coat everything and just say that the hunter "got" them out. But at least it ends with this instead of Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother just dying. That's rough.
