A question of syntax

Would you say muttering is louder than mumbling? Or is it even on the same scale?

  1. I don't know if they can be compared volume-wise. However, on an understandability scale, muttering I would say is much more discernible than mumbling. But what do I know?

  2. I agree with Melissa. I hear people speaking a full-volume but they have poor ennunciation so that person is unintelligable and I will tell them to stop mumbling. Muttering is always quiet. I think mumbling can be both quiet and regular but is usually quiet.

  3. I feel like I put a somewhat negative connotation on "muttering," like it implies a negative attitude or something. Like you're complaining. And i'm not sure i put a certain volume on either. Mumbling to me is just slurred speech... I guess loud mumbling would be weird. But anyway, what was the question again?

    p.s. word verification: unthe. Hmm..

  4. Thank you one and all for your insight. It was a thought-provoking question for me, and I think I'm satisfied with your responses. Good work, team.

And Jen, I had to try out "loud mumbling" to see if it was really all that weird. It was.
