More Old Lady Names

Remember the Old Lady game? Here's how to play.

  1. Pick the name you would choose for yourself out of each group, if pressed, and tell us why.
  2. Then share the name you think is the worst of the worst.

Here are some of the latest installments:

GROUP 1
Vertice
Olea
Birdie
Fern
LeJeune

GROUP 2
Ireva Fern
Myrtle
Loa
Nelda
Delora

GROUP 3
Verabel
Veon
Blanche

GROUP 4
Mildred
LaVere
Neva

GROUP 5
LaReal
DeVon (yes, this was a woman)
Ora
Geralee
Nona Bee
Verda
Zeala

Oh, man. I haven't seen some of these for a while (I started collecting them weeks ago), and they are busting me up. LaReal . . .

  1. Alright, fine. I'll go first.

    1. I'd say the best of this bunch is Birdie. Besides Fern (and who wants to be named after a bush? And not even AFTER one, just "Bush" or "Plant"), Birdie is the only other one that's not completely obscure.
    2. My pick is Loa. It's actually not too bad. Some might think you started to say Lois but got cut off, but otherwise it has a nice sound to it. The rest (Ireva Fern, I'm talking to you) are pretty terrible.
    3. Verabel. The 'bel' seems to soften the blow a little and make this one a little prettier sounding.
    4. After a longtime protest against Mildred, I think that's the best out of this group. Millie is the only redeeming thing I can find in any of them.
    5. While Nona Bee is sort of cute (sort of), I think I'd have to go with Zeala. Or Ora. But definitely not LaReal, which, if I hadn't seen with my own eyes, I would think was LaFake.

There are many, many quirky names this round, namely (ha!) DeVon, Verda, Nelda (gag), Veon, and Vertice (???), but I think LaReal takes the cake on worst of the worst. La + mid-name capitalization + "Real" = No. It breaks so many rules of appropriateness, like not naming your child an adjective, like LaFun. Ridiculous.

    Anyone beg to differ?

  2. 1: This is hard. I love Birdie and Fern. I mean, who wouldn't want the name Birdie? But there's also Olea, which could be awesome to sing: Ole-a, ole-a! Ole-a, ole-a!

2: Loa is rather pretty. A rather made-up name, and more just a sound than anything, but rather pretty.

    3. Verabel is nice. Blanche is awful. It just sounds so ugly (no offense). It makes me think of a grimace or belch.. or isn't blanching an action also? I mean like with your face. Gonna have to look that up.

    4. Neva. Kind of like Loa. Made up, but a nice sound. Mildred is my worst in that category. Any name with "dread" in it should be re-thought.

    5. Are you kidding? Nona Bee. That is a no-brainer. She has BEE in her name. Nona is cute too. Win win!

  3. Loved your take on these, Jen. Thanks for commenting. I feel like it's a lost art, these days.
